Origin
Commercial cranberry cultivation in the United States and Canada saw significant growth in the 19th century. By the year 1864, the state of Massachusetts already had over 3000 hectares of cranberry fields. The cultivation also piqued interest in Europe. In the Netherlands, interest in the cranberry began following its discovery on Terschelling.

In the year 1845, a barrel of cranberries washed ashore on Terschelling. Seeds scattered from the barrel led to the later discovery of the plants.

Usage and Components
Cranberries are consumed in various forms: fresh, dried, as juice, cooked, and as capsules. These dried cranberries from Canada are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, notably potassium.

These dried fruits, made suitable for long-term storage through the dehydration process, are excellent for use in salads, breakfast cereals, or as a snack. The taste is less tart than fresh cranberries, offering a pleasantly sweet aftertaste.
